László von Dohnányi
László von Dohnányi (b. Hamburg, Germany) explores the process and properties of painting itself by pairing digital and conventional painting techniques. Drawn to vector-based programs, his paintings merge digital and analog methods. Shapes are arrayed in a collage-like and repetitive manner on the canvas, echoing the cut-and-paste aesthetic derived from other image editing programs. Von Dohnányi’s process begins in the digital realm, sourcing content from the internet as well as utilizing architectural modeling software. By eschewing technological printing techniques in favor of manual physical executions, the images are purposefully decelerated. Through this complex process, the digital content is adapted and transformed, imbuing it with the inevitable idiosyncratic traces of the hand and incorporating a keen awareness of his art historical forebearers.
Von Dohnányi resides in London, United Kingdom. He received his MFA in Fine Arts from the Royal College of Arts. Recent solo exhibitions of von Dohnányi’s work include Artificial Radiance at the Miami gallery this past spring and Divining Network at Long Story Short (New York) in April 2023. Recent group shows include Voyeur at HBH Gallery, London; A New Sensation at Marguo Gallery, Paris; From the Cloud at Baert Gallery, Los Angeles; and three prior group shows with the gallery in 2022 and 2023.
